Description:This is the classic text on evolution. It is remarkable for its accessibility. Most seminal publications in science are intelligible only to expert readers. Darwin, in contrast, built his argument on simple logic and readily observed facts of nature – no special training is required to understand his work. It is a little wordy by modern standards, but definitely worth a look.

All of Darwin’s work is in the public domain, and much of it is provided free for download in .txt format by the good people over at Project Gutenberg. The posted link will take you to a list of available publications by Charles Darwin, including two editions of the Origin of Species.
