Welcome to Textbook Revolution!

TEXTBOOK REVOLUTION LIVES!

For most of 2007, the site has appeared dormant to the outside world. But we’ll soon be emerging from our cocoon with a whole new look and a new sense of purpose. Our new site will be wiki-based and will allow users (that’s you!) to add and review books directly. Down with the middleman!

Textbook Revolution is the web’s source for free educational materials. This is a student-run, volunteer-operated website started in response to the textbook industry’s constant drive to maximize profits instead of educational value.

TBR’s mission is to drive the adoption of free textbooks by teachers and professors. We want to get these books into classrooms. Our approach is to bring all of the free textbooks we can find together in one place, review them, and let the best rise to the top and find their way into the hands of students in classrooms around the world.

How can you help? It’s easy!

  • If you’re a PROFESSOR, you’re the most important link in the chain. Browse the books. Try out sample chapters in your classrooms. If you find a book you like, review it when the new site goes live in January—professors’ reviews will carry more weight. Tell your professor friends about free books. And bask in the glory your students will heap on you for bringing them free books.
  • If you’re a STUDENT, we need you! Find a free book on our site that would work for one of your classes. Show it to your professor and let him or her know that there are top-quality alternatives to the overpriced bookstore editions. If you use a book, review it. And tell your friends!
  • If you’re the AUTHOR of a free book, we want your stuff! For now, send a link to the book to submissions at textbookrevolution dot org. In the new site, you’ll be able to submit your own work automagically. If you have a list of schools that have adopted your free book, make sure to tell us that, too! While you’re here, review a free book by one of your peers (coming soon).
  • If you’re just browsing, welcome! If you find something you like, please take the time to review it (coming soon). And tell your friends!

At Textbook Revolution, you’ll find links to textbooks and select educational resources of all kinds. Some of the books are PDF files, others are viewable only online as e-books. Most books are aimed at undergraduates, but there are at least a few resources at every level, from kindergarten to post-doc. All of the books are offered for free by their respective copyright holders for online viewing. Beyond that, each book is as individual as the author behind it.

The majority of the posts are brief reviews with links to the authors websites. In a very few cases, Textbook Revolution is acting as the sole host for the books. In a few more, the site is an authorized mirror for files. We don’t publish our own material or contract authors to write books.
